CAVEAT !!! is a collective research project that focuses on the legal and socio-economic framework in which art workers operate, and the precarious conditions this generates. The project aims to redefine the contract as a tool for actively reconfiguring labour relations, and as an instrument toward self-emancipation.

The project title alludes to the legal phrase caveat emptor—buyer beware. However, here, this proverb stands as a warning against “unfair practices” in general ; a highly necessary warning indeed, as artists and art workers often find themselves on the frontline of the neoliberal flexibilization and deregulation of work.

CAVEAT !!! is a two-year co-create research project convened by the Brussels-based artists’ initiative Jubilee, in partnership with Open Source Publishing (OSP), No New Enemies and Eté 78, and supported by Innoviris.

In a preparatory residence at LODGERS (AIR Antwerp and MHKA) during the summer of 2017, Jubilee explored the interests and expertise of artists, legal specialists, scholars, curators, collectors and organizations of reflecting on the status, limitations and emancipatory potential of contracts in the art world.

A project website will be launched soon at
